Berg, H. E., L. Larsson, and P. A. Tesch. Lower limb skeletal muscle function after 6 wk of bed rest. J. Appl. Physiol. 82(1): 182–188, 1997.—Force, electromyographic (EMG) activity, muscle mass, and fiber characteristics were studied in seven healthy men before and after 6 wk of bed rest. Maximum voluntary isometric and concentric knee extensor torque decreased (P , 0.05) uniformly across angular velocities by 25–30% after bed rest. Maximum quadricep rectified EMG decreased by 19 6 23%, whereas submaximum (100-Nm isometric action) EMG increased by 44 6 28%. Knee extensormuscle cross-sectional area (CSA), assessed by using magnetic resonance imaging, decreased by 14 6 4%. Maximum torque per knee extensor CSA decreased by 13 6 9%. Vastus lateralis fiber CSA decreased 18 6 14%. Neither type I, IIA, and IIB fiber percentages nor their relative proportions of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms were altered after bed rest. Because the decline in strength could not be entirely accounted for by decreased muscle CSA, it is suggested that the strength loss is also due to factors resulting in decreased neural input to muscle and/or reduced specific tension of muscle, as evidenced by a decreased torque/EMG ratio. Additionally, it is concluded thatmuscle unloading in humans does not induce important changes in fiber type or MHC composition or in vivo muscle contractile properties.

Relationship of body anthropometric measures with skeletal muscle mass and strength in a reference cohort of young Finnish women
OBJECTIVES 1) To study if limb length explains variability in appendicular and total muscle mass better than height and 2) if muscle mass adjusted for limb length rather than height correlates better with grip and knee extension strength. METHODS 400 healthy women aged 20-40 were recruited as a reference population. Body composition, limb length, grip strength and knee extension strength were...
متن کاملSkeletal muscle strength and endurance in patients with mild COPD and the effects of weight training.
This study poses two questions: 1) is there an abnormality in isokinetic skeletal muscle strength and endurance in mild chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)? and 2) what is the effect of a randomized, controlled, 12 week hospital outpatient weight training programme in terms of skeletal muscle function and exercise tolerance? Upper and lower limb isokinetic maximum and sustained muscle ...
متن کاملCollagen VI deficiency reduces muscle pathology, but does not improve muscle function, in the γ-sarcoglycan-null mouse
Muscular dystrophy is characterized by progressive skeletal muscle weakness and dystrophic muscle exhibits degeneration and regeneration of muscle cells, inflammation and fibrosis. Skeletal muscle fibrosis is an excessive deposition of components of the extracellular matrix including an accumulation of Collagen VI. We hypothesized that a reduction of Collagen VI in a muscular dystrophy model th...
متن کاملFeedforward and Feedback Function of Selected Lower Limb Muscles Following Plyometric Exercises and Cryotherapy
Purpose: Despite the widespread use of cryotherapy in sports fields there is a lack of certain evidence of its impact of it on muscle activation especially following fatigue-induced exercise. This study aimed to assess the impact of cryotherapy alone and after plyometric exercises on knee muscle activation during the drop jump task. Method: 35 active female subjects (mean age of 22.74±2.10, m...
متن کاملLow Skeletal Muscle Mass in the Lower Limbs Is Independently Associated to Knee Osteoarthritis
OBJECTIVES It has been reported that low skeletal muscle mass correlates with knee osteoarthritis in obese individuals. This study aimed to investigate whether lower limb skeletal muscle mass is independently associated with knee osteoarthritis in the general population. MATERIALS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study used public data from the Fourth and Fifth Korean National Health and Nutr...
متن کاملLower limb skeletal muscle mass: development of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry prediction model.
Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can accurately measure lower limb skeletal muscle (SM) mass, this method is complex and costly. A potential practical alternative is to estimate lower limb SM with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The aim of the present study was to develop and validate DXA-SM prediction equations. Identical landmarks (i.e., inferior border of the ischial tuberos...
